This page will show you how to set up the Canon MX490 scanner.

Prepare your printer for the scan operation by following the instructions below.

  • Complete your printer’s hardware setup if you haven’t done it yet.
  • Install the MP driver on your computer using the setup CD/ROM or the downloaded driver file.
  • Ensure that the IJ Scan Utility is installed along with the MP driver on your computer.
  • Connect your printer and the computer to the same network over a USB or wireless connection.

Now, let’s see how to use the different scan options in detail.

SCAN TO EMAIL

You can scan and attach a photo or document as an email attachment using the IJ Scan Utility. To know more about the same, follow the instructions below.

Scan To Email
  • Turn on your Canon MX490 printer if it is turned off.
  • Now, load the original paper or document you want to scan on the scanner glass or in the ADF of your printer.
  • Open the IJ Scan Utility on your computer.
  • For Windows: Click on the Search field. Type the IJ Scan Utility command and select it. If you’re using Windows 7, open All Programs. Click Canon Utilities > IJ Scan Utility > IJ Scan Utility.
  • For Mac: Open Applications > Canon Utilities > IJ Scan Utility > IJ Scan Utility.
  • Choose your printer model from the Product Name drop-down menu if it is not selected correctly.
  • Select the Document or Photo Scan option.
  • Click on the Settings button.
  • Go to the Application Settings section on the Settings screen.
  • Select the Attach to email option by clicking the checkbox beside it.
  • Choose your email client from the drop-down menu beside the Attach to email option.
  • Configure the other scan settings, as per your preferences.
  • Finally, click the OK button.
  • Now, your printer will start scanning the placed page or document.
  • Once the scanning is completed, the selected email client window will open with a copy of the scanned document.
  • Send the scanned copy to the recipient of your desire by typing the recipient’s email address in the To field.

SCAN TO COMPUTER

Perform the simple instructions given below to scan and save the scanned document on your computer using the printer’s control panel.

  • Check to ensure that your Canon printer is turned on.
  • Place the original document that you want to scan on your printer’s scanner glass or in the ADF.
  • Initiate the scan operation on your printer by pressing the Scan button.
  • Now, if you’re performing the scan to computer operation for the first time, the Scan menu screen will open on your printer.
  • Select Save to > “the connected computer” and press OK.
  • Configure other scan settings such as document type, etc., as per your preferences and press OK.
  • Now, your Canon printer will start to scan the placed document.
  • The printer sends the scanned copy of the document automatically to the selected computer once the scanning is over.

SCAN TO MAC

Scan and save the document or photo to your Mac computer using the Canon IJ Scan Utility.

Scan To Mac
  • Open the Canon IJ Scan Utility on your Mac computer.
  • Check to ensure that your printer model is selected correctly.
  • In the ADF or on the scanner glass of your printer, load the original photo, paper, or document you want to scan.
  • Now, select the Document Scan, Photo Scan, Custom Scan, or any scan type that you wish to perform.
  • Click the Settings button.
  • Configure the Source Settings and Application Settings correctly.
  • Under the Save Settings section, select the desired location (on which you wish to save the scanned document) from the "Save in" drop-down menu.
  • Finally, click OK to initiate the scan operation.

SCAN TO USB

This section will guide you in scanning the document and saving its copy to the USB-connected computer.

  • Initiate the scan operation from the printer’s control panel.
  • Press Scan on your printer’s control panel.
  • Now, if you’re performing the scan operation for the first time, the Scan menu screen will open.
  • Select Save to.
  • Choose your computer that is connected to the printer by selecting the Local (USB) option.
  • Press OK.
  • Set the document type, color, etc., as per your preferences.
  • Finally, press the OK button.

SCAN TO PDF

To scan and save the scanned document as a PDF file, follow the instructions below.

Scan To Pdf
  • Load the original copy of the document you want to scan on your printer.
  • Open the IJ Scan Utility application.
  • Select the scan type you’re performing.
  • Click on the Settings button on the main screen of IJ Scan Utility.
  • Now, go to the Save Settings section on the Settings screen.
  • Select the PDF or PDF (Multiple Pages) option from the Data Format drop-down menu.
  • Similarly, choose the Standard or High compression type from the PDF Compression option.
  • Click the checkbox beside the “Create a PDF file that supports keyword search” option if necessary.
  • Configure the other scan settings as per your preferences.
  • Finally, click OK.

SCAN TO FLASH DRIVE

Scan and save the scanned document to a USB flash drive by following the instructions given below.

  • Switch on your Canon MX490 printer if it is turned off.
  • Now, place the document with its print-side facing up on the printer's scanner glass or in the ADF.
  • Locate and press the button named “Scan” on your printer’s control panel.
  • Press the Menu button.
  • Connect the USB flash drive (on which you wish to save the document) into your printer’s USB port.
  • Select the USB flash drive option on the Save to screen.
  • Configure the scan settings as per your preferences, and finally, press the YES button to initiate the scan operation.
